Hidden Figures Fact Check: Who Were Katherine Johnson’s Two Husbands?
Cinema thrives on dramatic compression. In the screenplay for Hidden Figures, Katherine Johnson (portrayed by Taraji P. Henson) encounters National Guard officer Jim Johnson at a post-church reception in 1961. The film frames their courtship as a parallel tension to the space race: Katherine fights for professional respect inside the Space Task Group at Langley Research Center, while Jim stumbles through an initial hesitation about a woman doing advanced analytical work before earning her trust.
The screen version made for compelling theater, but the historical chronology tells a very different story. By the time astronaut John Glenn climbed aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, Katherine and Jim Johnson had already been husband and wife for more than two years. They married in 1959. Jim was not an outsider cheering her on from the sidelines during her breakthrough projects; he was already her daily anchor at home, actively supporting a household that balanced school runs, military drills, and classified orbital mechanics.
