Will Oscar Isaac Return to Star Wars? His Candid Thoughts and Franchise Status
When J.J. Abrams cast Isaac in 2015's The Force Awakens, Poe Dameron was not even supposed to survive the first act. The character was originally scripted to perish in the crash on Jakku. Isaac convinced Abrams to alter the plot, arguing that playing another short-lived catalyst character felt like a creative dead end. What followed was a whirlwind elevation into one of modern cinema's largest machinery gears. Isaac delivered the very first spoken line of dialogue in the sequel era, cementing his status alongside Daisy Ridley and John Boyega as the modern triumvirate of the Skywalker saga.
The experience took an undeniable creative toll. By the time production wrapped on The Rise of Skywalker, the grueling demands of green-screen stage work, reshoots, and rigid studio micromanagement had exhausted him. Isaac immediately pivoted to auteur-driven independent projects. He threw himself into Paul Schrader's stripped-down revenge thriller The Card Counter, Denis Villeneuve's sprawling sci-fi adaptation Dune, and HBO's emotionally punishing miniseries Scenes from a Marriage. When asked at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival whether he would ever suit up as Poe again, Isaac answered dryly: "Probably, if I need another house or something."
