On May 6, 2006, tensions between Ronnie Radke and an acquaintance named Marcel Colquitt boiled over. Following weeks of antagonistic phone calls and personal disputes, the pair agreed to an in-person confrontation on the outskirts of Las Vegas near Shadow Rock Park. Radke brought several friends, including Chase Rader. Colquitt arrived with his brother and 18-year-old Michael Cook.

The fistfight rapidly deteriorated. Weapons surfaced almost immediately. During the Michael Cook altercation, Cook attacked Rader, prompting Rader to draw a firearm and fire multiple rounds. Cook sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Another individual was injured in the crossfire. Radke himself was armed with brass knuckles, actively participating in the violent brawl before the gunfire scattered the crowd across the desert scrub.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police homicide detectives launched an exhaustive investigation. Rader faced intense interrogation, but prosecutors declined to press homicide charges against him, determining that Rader acted under Nevada self-defense statutes when Cook charged him. Marcel Colquitt faced felony prosecution alongside Radke. Tragically, in September 2007, before the legal proceedings reached trial, Colquitt died by suicide. The district attorney turned focus entirely on Radke's culpability for precipitating the violent conflict.
