What Tiktok Actually Requires: Accepted Documents and Selfie Checks for Age Verification

Dive deep into What Tiktok Actually Requires: Accepted Documents and Selfie Checks for Age Verification in this comprehensive feature.

Q1: Why did TikTok suddenly change my age or lock my account without warning?
TikTok uses automated behavioral analysis alongside manual flags. If an account frequently interacts with child-targeted content, posts videos where facial metrics suggest the creator is under 13 (or under 16 depending on region), or has a linked account flagged elsewhere, the platform automatically imposes restrictions until proof of age is submitted.

Q2: How long does TikTok retain uploaded copies of my passport or driver's license?
Under TikTok's documented user safety disclosures, government-issued photo ID documents are encrypted upon transit and held on isolated servers. The platform states that documents submitted for standard account appeals are deleted within 30 to 90 days after the appeal process concludes, though hashed metadata may remain on file to prevent duplicate submissions.

Q3: Can I verify my age on TikTok without providing an ID or facial selfie?
In supported countries, you can verify your account by providing credit card authorization, which relies on your existing banking verification without storing identity cards. If your region does not support card authorization and you decline both document submission and facial estimation, the platform will permanently restrict or delete the flagged account.

Q4: What should I do if the app says my ID appeal was rejected?
Appeals are commonly rejected due to glare, blurred typography, cropped card edges, or discrepancies between your account profile name and your legal identification. Re-photograph the document in natural daylight, ensure all four corners of the physical card remain visible, and submit the ticket through TikTok's web-based Safety Center if the mobile app locks you out of further attempts.
