Step-by-Step Visual Walkthrough: Double Spacing in Word Across All Devices
The most frequent layout defect reported by authors occurs when a document technically set to 2.0 spacing displays gaping, irregular bands of white space each time a writer presses Enter. This visual glitch is caused by Word's default paragraph trailing properties.
By default, Microsoft builds an extra padding value, typically 8pt in modern iterations or 10pt in older builds, beneath every paragraph block. When you apply double spacing on top of this automatic padding, Word applies double spacing to the text lines and then stacks the trailing point padding on top of that. The end result resembles triple spacing between paragraphs.
Eliminating this gap takes two steps. Select the affected text block, click the line spacing drop-down tool on your ribbon, and select Remove Space After Paragraph. Alternatively, open the Paragraph dialog box, locate the "Spacing" section, and manually dial the "After:" field down to 0 pt. Check the toggle that reads "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style". Your document will immediately snap into crisp, standardized line rhythm without unwanted gaps.
