Project Hail Mary Climax Timeline: Exactly When and How Rocky Is Saved from Extinction
The near-fatal catastrophe stems from a fundamental laboratory oversight during the breeding of Taumoeba, the predatory microbe intended to eradicate Astrophage. Astrophage, a stellar microorganism that consumes star energy and drains luminosity, had pushed both Earth and Rocky's home planet, 40 Eridani b, toward total ecological collapse. While sampling the atmosphere of the planet Adrian in the Tau Ceti system, Grace and Rocky isolated Taumoeba-829, a selective strain capable of surviving high concentrations of atmospheric nitrogen.
To cultivate the organism safely, the pair stored it in containers made of xenonite, the hyper-dense Eridian material composed of xenon atoms bound under extreme pressure. Eridian technology relies exclusively on xenonite for hulls, conduits, viewing portals, and structural fasteners. It resisted nearly every chemical reaction known to science. It could not, however, resist Taumoeba-829.
During the selective breeding process inside Grace’s centrifuge, the microbes mutated. They developed a taste for xenonite bonds, consuming the substance as a trace nutrient. Because Grace stored his samples inside sealed glass containers within the Hail Mary, his ship remained structurally intact. Rocky, possessing no glass or synthetic polymers, loaded thousands of liters of Taumoeba directly into native xenonite holding tanks aboard his ship, the Blip-A.
The failure was silent. As the two ships separated, Grace setting an engine burn for Sol and Rocky initiating his solitary drive back to 40 Eridani, the microbes dissolved their tanks, seeped into fuel storage, and devoured the engines' primary Astrophage reserves. Without fuel, Rocky had no thrusters, no environmental heat, and no automated life support.
