By Sophia Al-Mansoor
Q1: What exact date is Domingo de Ramos in 2026?
A1: Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) takes place on Sunday, March 29, 2026 across Catholic, Protestant, and Western Christian churches worldwide.
Q2: When does Easter break start for schools and businesses in 2026?
A2: In Spain and many Latin American countries, school holidays begin either the Friday before Palm Sunday (March 27, 2026) or on Holy Wednesday (April 1, 2026). Public holidays generally run from Maundy Thursday (April 2) or Good Friday (April 3) through Easter Monday (April 6), varying by jurisdiction.
Q3: Does Eastern Orthodox Palm Sunday match the Western date in 2026?
A3: Not necessarily. The Eastern Orthodox Church calculates Easter using the Julian calendar and specific astronomical alignments. In years where Western and Eastern calculations diverge, Orthodox Palm Sunday occurs later in the spring.
Q4: Why do churches burn Palm Sunday branches the following year?
A4: Palm fronds blessed during the 2026 Palm Sunday Mass are kept throughout the year. Parishes collect and burn these dried branches early in 2027 to generate the ashes placed on foreheads for Ash Wednesday.
