Empty shelves create friction between digital promises and actual fulfillment. When a requested box of cereal or cut of meat is absent from inventory, the store's automated fulfillment software intervenes.
Under the corporate item substitution policy, the system suggests or automatically assigns an alternative item of equal or greater value if the customer enables substitutions. A shopper ordering an off-brand 32-ounce yogurt might receive a premium brand equivalent. Company rules state the customer pays only the original, lower price of the out-of-stock item. If a smaller package size is substituted, the system bills the lower amount.
Financial complications arise when an item cannot be replaced at all. If an out-of-stock item is dropped without a substitute, the adjusted basket value can drop below the original target. The billing platform does not retroactively assess a small-basket fee if an inventory shortage pushes the final receipt under the threshold. Shoppers retain the option to review and decline any out of stock replacement directly inside the mobile interface before arrival.
