From 2013 Debut to Timeless Classic: the 'Best Day of My Life' Journey
Unlike conventional chart-toppers backed by immediate radio saturation, "Best Day of My Life" followed an atypical distribution pipeline. When Island Records sent the song to radio stations in March 2013, early programmer reception was lukewarm. Program directors pegged it as an imitation of The Lumineers or Mumford & Sons.
Dirty Canvas and Island took the track straight to film studios, television networks, and advertising agencies. Within months, the pop rock commercial soundtrack phenomenon took off. Hyundai secured the song for a high-rotation television campaign; Lowe's featured it prominently; movie studios dropped the track into trailers for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Delivery Man. By the time listeners tuned into Top 40 stations in early 2014, the hook felt instantly familiar.
That organic brand familiarity forced commercial radio to add the single to high rotation. The track spent 36 weeks climbing the chart, ultimately peaking at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and securing the No. 1 spot on both the Adult Top 40 and Rock Airplay charts.
