Fact-Checking Jacob Barnett’s Story: What True Crime Documentaries Get Wrong About the Math Prodigy
In 2013, the family relocated from their Indiana home to Waterloo, Ontario. The move occurred after Jacob gained acceptance to Perimeter Scholars International (PSI), a rigorous master’s program run by the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. At just fifteen years old, he became the youngest student ever admitted to the program, studying alongside elite university graduates from around the globe. His talent for theoretical physics, focusing on quantum mechanics and loop quantum gravity, was authenticated by top researchers in the field.
Behind the scenes, however, the Barnett family home was coming apart at the seams. In 2010, Kristine and Michael Barnett had adopted Natalia Grace, a six-year-old orphan from Ukraine who lived with a rare form of dwarfism. By 2012, convinced that Natalia was an adult masquerading as a child who harbored violent intentions, the parents petitioned an Indiana probate court to legally alter her birth year from 2003 to 1989. The move to Canada in 2013, publicly framed as a selfless maternal pilgrimage to support Jacob's academic pursuits, simultaneously served as the mechanism to leave Natalia behind in an apartment in Lafayette, Indiana, alone.
