If You Turn off Active Status on Instagram, Here Is What Contacts Actually See
Adjusting this privacy setting takes less than a minute, whether using an iPhone, an Android device, or a desktop browser. Because settings occasionally shift during software updates, following the direct menu pathway ensures complete isolation.
Open Instagram, tap your profile picture in the bottom right corner, and select the three horizontal lines (the hamburger menu) in the top right. Scroll down to the section labeled "How others can interact with you" and select "Messages and story replies."
From there, tap "Show activity status." You will see two distinct switches. The master switch controls your general online presence and last active timestamp. Beneath it sits a secondary toggle labeled "Show when you're active together," which specifically informs users in group chats when you are concurrently browsing the same conversation. Switching off the top master toggle automatically shuts down both controls, ensuring your presence is hidden across all individual chats, group threads, and desktop web sessions tied to your account.
