Fact-Checking Academy Employment: Does Age 18 Lock You out of Entry-Level Work?
Retail margins force big-box stores to rely heavily on cross-trained employees. A frontline worker assigned to footwear might cover the customer service desk at noon and push freight in the stockroom by mid-afternoon. Because Academy designs its staffing model around cross-department utility, every associate must be legally cleared to work anywhere in the store.
Minor labor laws under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sharply limit what workers aged 16 and 17 can do in commercial spaces. Federal Hazardous Occupations Orders bar minors from:
- Operating, loading, or unloading motorized power-driven hoisting apparatus, including forklifts, electric pallet jacks, and order pickers.
- Operating or clearing commercial cardboard balers and trash compactors.
- Working shifts past 7:00 PM during the academic school year in most standard retail classifications.
Academy receives multiple freight trucks every week packed with heavy outdoor power gear, gun safes weighing up to 800 pounds, flat-bottom boats, and bulk merchandise. Restricting a worker from operating the stockroom baler or maneuvering loaded pallets makes that worker a liability to logistics management. Rather than building parallel, restricted shifts for high schoolers, the corporate office standardizes all entry-level positions around adult labor capabilities.
