Every Free Rein Character Ranked by Their Riding Skills and Story Arc
By Alexander Ross
The central drama hinges on the connection between Jaylen Barron's Zoe Phillips and the Friesian cross stallion, Raven. It is an archetype familiar to equine literature, yet played with genuine physical intensity. Raven begins the series untamed, traumatized by mistreatment, and slated to be sold or put down.
Zoe’s riding succeeds because she strips away traditional performance anxiety. While rivals enter the ring obsessing over course time faults and ribbon placement, Zoe rides out of pure protection for her horse. Barron brings athletic presence to the saddle, using long releases over fences and trusting Raven's stride rather than fighting his mouth.
Their relationship survives horse thieves, paddock sabotage, and the constant threat of international sale. When Zoe rides bareback across the surf, it serves as the emotional baseline for the entire production: horse riding as mutual trust rather than human domination.
