Does Tite Kubo Actually Despise Shuhei Hisagi? the Truth Behind Bleach's Biggest Running Gag
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
The idea that Kubo hates Hisagi collapses under scrutiny once you read the author's own words. Through his official fan club platform, Klub Outside, Kubo has fielded hundreds of subscriber questions regarding character relationships, design inspirations, and behind-the-scenes plotting. His remarks about Hisagi paint the picture of a creator having immense fun with a favorite toy.
In multiple Q&As, Kubo clarified that Hisagi is one of the easiest and most entertaining characters for him to write. Characters like Byakuya Kuchiki or Sosuke Aizen operate within strict behavioral boundaries; they cannot break composure without damaging their narrative mystique. Hisagi operates under no such restrictions. He can bleed, panic, complain, get drunk, and pick fights he cannot win.
When asked in fan interactions why Hisagi is constantly picked on, Kubo indicated that an author only bullies a character they trust the audience to care about. If a background officer without fan investment gets beaten down, the scene falls flat. Because Hisagi consistently placed well in the official Bleach character popularity polls, regularly cracking the top twenty despite modest screen time, his indignities resonated. Kubo knew the audience liked Hisagi enough to laugh at his misfortunes while still rooting for his survival.
