Did Alix Earle Really Never Read a Book? Fact-Checking the Tiktok Sensation's Viral Claim
By Alexander Ross
The immediate sticking point for critics was Earle's academic background. Earle graduated in May 2023 from the University of Miami, earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the prestigious Herbert Business School. Commenters immediately flooded Reddit discussion threads and quote-retweets to ask a practical question: How does an honors student from an elite private school graduate without reading assigned texts?
The answer lies in how academic assessment models have changed over the past two decades. Business curricula, particularly undergraduate marketing and consumer research programs, prioritize modular materials:
- Case studies spanning 10, 25 pages rather than full monographs.
- Slide decks, research abstracts, and quantitative analytics dashboards.
- Digital platforms offering chapter quizzes that assess concepts through short excerpts.
- Study-aid portals like Quizlet, SparkNotes, and course pack digests.
Earle never claimed she was illiterate; she stated she never finished an entire bound book. For students educated in the digital era, completing coursework through targeted skimming and synthesized study guides is common practice. Her academic journey reflects an environment where students read thousands of disconnected pages per semester without ever experiencing a single beginning-to-end narrative arc.
