Upon returning to post-revolutionary Mexico, Rivera married Guadalupe "Lupe" Marín in 1922. Marín was an imposing, sharp-witted model and writer from Guadalajara. Together, they had two daughters: Guadalupe Rivera Marín, born in 1924, and Ruth Rivera Marín, born in 1927. These two women grew into the most visible heirs of the Mexican muralism lineage.

Guadalupe, nicknamed "Pico," chose law and governance. She earned a doctorate in law, served as a federal deputy, held a seat in the Mexican Senate, and served as an ambassador. She dedicated her later years to heading the Diego Rivera Foundation, writing extensively about her father's home life and publishing personal culinary memoirs that cataloged the Rivera-Marín household. Guadalupe remained an influential public figure in Mexico until her death in January 2023 at the age of 98.

Ruth Rivera Marín took a different path, directly engaging her father's artistic discipline. She became an architect, breaking barriers as the first woman to graduate with an architecture degree from the prestigious Escuela Superior de Ingeniería y Arquitectura of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN). Ruth worked alongside her father, playing an instrumental part in designing and realizing the Museo Anahuacalli in Coyoacán. Her career was cut short when she died of cancer in 1969 at age 42, leaving her own children to manage her architectural legacy.
