Young Carole Radziwill in Photos: Rare 90S Images from Abc News to Camelot Royalty
The bond between Carole, Anthony, John F. Kennedy Jr., and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy formed the emotional core of Radziwill's bestselling 2005 memoir, What Remains. John and Anthony were maternal cousins who functioned more like brothers, raised in close proximity under the intense scrutiny surrounding their mothers, Jackie and Lee. When Carolyn married John in 1996, she and Carole forged an intensely protective friendship, bonded by the experience of entering an iconic American family while preserving their own identities.
Surviving photographs of Carole and Carolyn in the late 1990s capture classic 1990s vintage style: Calvin Klein silhouettes, crisp white button-downs, dark sunglasses, and unstyled hair. Far from formal society portraits, the candid frames show four young adults escaping public attention on private beaches, laughing on small motorboats in Martha's Vineyard, and supporting each other through Anthony's worsening medical interventions.
The private sanctuary collapsed in July 1999. John, Carolyn, and Carolyn's sister Lauren perished in a plane crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. Just three weeks later, on August 10, 1999, Anthony died of cancer at age 40. Within twenty-four days, the world Carole had inhabited across the decade vanished, leaving an archive of private images that serve as poignant markers of a devastating chapter.
