You’re Doing It Wrong: the Hidden Heat Mistake That Ruins Iron-on Patches
Securing the bond is half the battle; preserving it through the laundry requires continuous discipline. Follow these fundamental garment washing and care instructions to ensure your patch survives years of wear:
Turn the clothing item inside out before it enters the drum. This prevents the abrasive outer face of the patch from beating against the washing machine walls or snagging on zippers. Wash exclusively in cold water, never exceeding 85°F (30°C). Warm or hot wash cycles soften the thermoplastic layer, allowing mechanical agitation to tear the adhesive free from the fabric core.
Never toss the garment into a high-heat tumble dryer. Dryer air frequently reaches 140°F to 160°F, which turns rigid adhesives pliable again. Always hang dry or lay the garment flat on a drying rack. If dry cleaning, notify the cleaners explicitly to skip solvent spot-treatment near patch zones, as industrial perchloroethylene dissolves synthetic adhesives on contact.
