Why Your Visa Gift Card Keeps Getting Declined Online (And the Easy Fix)
Transferring plastic card balances into digital wallet environments provides mixed results. Digital wallet compatibility varies depending on the underlying issuer's Bank Identification Number (BIN). While standard checking-account debit cards bind easily to Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Samsung Pay, many prepaid gift card BINs are hard-coded to reject tokenization. If an issuer does not support digital tokenization, the wallet app returns a notice stating the institution does not participate in mobile wallet services.
For in-person purchases where you cannot add the card to a phone, processing odd-dollar balances requires a split tender transaction. When your prepaid balance drops to an awkward amount, such as $7.42, online checkouts will not let you pay the remainder with a secondary credit card. Most online stores permit only one bank card per transaction. Point of sale terminals inside brick-and-mortar stores, however, can handle divided payments.
Tell the cashier you need to perform a split transaction before swiping or inserting the card. Specify the exact amount available on the gift card down to the penny. The cashier enters $7.42 on the register keypad, prompting the terminal to request that specific sum. Once that transaction clears and exhausts the prepaid card, present your standard credit card or cash to settle the remaining balance. If the cashier scans the total order first and you swipe without warning, the terminal attempts to bill the entire balance to the gift card, generating an automatic decline.
