Why Nazanin Boniadi Is Calling out Hollywood over the Latest Strikes in Iran
Effective solidarity requires more than posting fleeting hashtags or delivering pre-written lines at black-tie galas. Boniadi has consistently outlined concrete actions that cultural figures, studios, and international bodies can take to support Iranian citizens directly.
Cultural institutions can start by providing platforms for Iranian artists, writers, and documentarians who have fled domestic censorship. Rather than shelving sensitive regional projects, streaming services and film festivals should finance and showcase authentic Iranian diaspora narratives. Creative unions, including the Screen Actors Guild and the Writers Guild of America, can issue formal protections and advocacy statements for dissident storytellers living under direct threats from foreign state agents.
Western governments must also be held accountable. Foreign policy cannot swing wildly between backchannel concessions and reckless military strikes, both of which discard the interests of the Iranian public. Boniadi continues to urge international leaders to enforce targeted sanctions against human rights abusers, close corrupt financial loopholes used by regime officials in Western capitals, and provide open internet access through satellite technology so citizens can document abuses during communication blackouts.
