Why Everyone on Tiktok Is Calling You a ‘Larper’: the Insult Taking over Your Fyp
Gen X had "sellout." Millennials had "hipster" and "poser." Gen Z chose "LARPer." The difference lies in the level of immersion.
A 1990s poser bought a Nirvana t-shirt at the mall without knowing who Kurt Cobain was. The infraction was shallow: simple posturing. A modern LARPer does not stop at merchandise. They construct an entire digital ecosystem around the pretense. They download specialized Lightroom presets, change their vocal inflection, film morning routines at sunrise, and tag brands they cannot afford.
The insult stings because it highlights the elaborate labor behind the pretense. Setting up a tripod to film yourself writing in a leather-bound notebook at a café is fundamentally performative. The viewer notices the camera placement before they notice the handwriting. The moment that tripod registers, the spell breaks. The comment lands: "Nice LARP."
