Why Did Conan, Stewart, and Kimmel Cover the White Stripes? the True Story Behind the Fest Reunion
By David Miller
The acoustic performance at Netflix Is a Joke Fest represented more than just musical nostalgia; it underscored a generational transformation in show business diplomacy. During the 1990s, late-night was defined by hostility. The clash between David Letterman and Jay Leno over Johnny Carson's seat on The Tonight Show was chronicled as corporate warfare. Guests were pressured to choose sides, producers actively sabotaged rival bookings, and personal relationships between hosts rarely existed outside court filings and tabloid leaks.
Conan, Stewart, and Kimmel deliberately rejected that toxic blueprint. When NBC unceremoniously pushed Conan out of The Tonight Show in 2010, Kimmel publicly backed Conan on his own network show, delivering a brutal monologue dressed in full Leno makeup and gray wig. Stewart repeatedly used The Daily Show to defend Conan while calling out network incompetence.
By the time the Hollywood writers' strike arrived in 2023, that mutual respect had evolved into institutional solidarity. The launch of the Strike Force Five podcast demonstrated that modern hosts viewed each other as colleagues weathering the streaming transition together rather than combatants fighting over dwindling broadcast ratings. When the trio sang about walking together to school and sharing books, the subtext was unmistakable: they were three survivors of an unforgiving industry, still standing because they chose friendship over territorial warfare.
