Why Dexter Morgan and Doakes Memes Are Suddenly Dominating Feeds Again
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
This is not the first time Sergeant Doakes has anchored internet culture. Back in 2012, King’s profane confrontation inside a shipping container in the season one finale birthed the legendary "Surprise Motherfucker" clip. That punchline survived the death of Vine, circulated across Reddit reaction threads for a decade, and established Doakes as an accidental founding father of modern meme culture.
The current wave represents a sophisticated evolution of that early meme format. Instead of relying solely on shocking one-liners, contemporary creators use multi-layered audio stems from the show. The viral TikTok Dexter sound alternates between Daniel Licht’s eerie, xylophone-driven theme score and Dexter’s internal "dark passenger" monologues. Users layer Dexter’s clinical inner voice over footage of their own harmless impulses, creating a comical clash between psychotic menace and ordinary domestic life.
Erik King's performance benefits the most from this sonic revival. Because Doakes was written out of the narrative early in the show's original run, his scenes carry a concentrated, unfiltered energy that later seasons never duplicated. The sheer density of memorable facial expressions King packed into two seasons has given contemporary editors a bottomless goldmine of reaction footage.
