Who Writes Percy Jackson? Rick Riordan's Complete Lore, Spin-off Canon, and Next Disney Projects
Instead of claiming sole authority over worldwide mythologies, Riordan launched a separate publishing imprint in 2018 with Disney-Hyperion: Rick Riordan Presents. The goal was simple. When readers asked him to write books about Hindu, Mayan, Korean, or Yoruba folklore, he declined, choosing instead to provide an editorial and promotional launchpad for authors from those cultural backgrounds.
The imprint has published dozens of titles across several years, launching successful series such as Roshani Chokshi’s Aru Shah sequence and Yoon Ha Lee’s space-mythology hybrids. Riordan provides cover blurbs, writes introductions, and uses his social media platforms to promote the releases, without claiming co-authorship or royalties on their text.
This approach transformed how major publishers handle diverse children's fiction. By lending his commercial clout to other writers, Riordan expanded middle grade mythic fiction while keeping his own creative writing grounded in the classical frameworks he studied and taught for decades.
