Who Was Jackie Aprile Sr. ? the Complete Character Guide and Faqs for Sopranos Fans
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
The tragedy of Jackie Aprile Sr. extends far beyond his hospital bed. His passing dismantled the safety net protecting his household, leaving three distinct lives to spiral across subsequent seasons.
His wife, Rosalie Aprile, endured an agonizing descent into mob widowhood. Rosalie loved the status, the security, and the respect Jackie afforded her. After his death, she found herself courted by Ralph Cifaretto, a violent sociopath who degraded her household and openly insulted Jackie's memory. Rosalie spent the rest of the series mourning not just Jackie, but the lost dignity of the Aprile name.
His brother, Richie Aprile, emerged from an eight-year federal prison sentence in Season 2 expecting the kingdom his brother had commanded. Incapable of accepting Tony Soprano as boss, Richie leaned heavily on his deceased brother's legacy to mount an insurrection. He repeatedly cited Jackie's authority to justify his insubordination, creating friction that ended when Janice Soprano shot Richie dead at the kitchen table.
Most devastating of all was the fate of his son, Jackie Aprile Jr. On his deathbed, Jackie Sr. explicitly extracted a promise from Tony: keep his boy away from the life. Jackie Sr. wanted his son to become an educated doctor or lawyer. But without a father's firm hand, Jackie Jr. attempted to mimic the mythology he heard at the dinner table. Believing he could replicate his father's legendary robbery of Feech La Manna, Jackie Jr. led an ill-fated stick-up of a poker game run by Christopher Moltisanti in Season 3. The botched robbery resulted in gunfire, a dead dealer, and Tony sanctioning Jackie Jr.'s execution in the projects by Vito Spatafore. The very empire Jackie Sr. built ultimately consumed his bloodline.
