Who Was Eris? Unraveling the True Origin of Discord in Greek Myth
Modern adaptations often misunderstand Eris by treating her as an agent of random, cartoonish mischief. Ancient storytellers were far more perceptive. To Homer and Hesiod, discord was not silly; it was lethal, systemic, and rooted in human insecurity.
The tragedy of the golden apple worked because Eris understood her targets. She did not force Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite to feud. She did not force Paris to abduct Helen, nor did she compel Agamemnon to launch a thousand ships across the Aegean. She simply provided a mirror for their vanity and watched them act. Ancient Greek myth preserved Eris to remind listeners that empires are rarely destroyed by outside monsters; they crumble when small, unresolved rivalries are left to fester.
