The defining athletic peak of Abell’s professional journey came during the autumn and winter of 1966. The Chiefs were a dynamic, talent-rich collective featuring future Hall of Famers Bobby Bell, Willie Lanier, and Emmitt Thomas. Abell held his ground alongside them, operating as a starting outside linebacker who provided steady, mistake-free alignment against the pass-heavy schemes of the fledgling AFL.

On New Year’s Day 1967, the Chiefs dominated the Buffalo Bills 31-7 in the AFL Championship game at War Memorial Stadium. The victory earned Kansas City the right to represent the upstart league against Vince Lombardi’s NFL dynasty. In a later interview recounted by the Panama City News Herald, Abell described the sheer shock of that historic collision: "Oh my God, we’re playing the Packers." Up to that point, the AFL had been derided by established NFL executives as a second-tier, gimmick league. The Chiefs were suddenly thrown into an unprecedented media circus.

The game itself, played on January 15, 1967, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, was tightly contested in the first half. Kansas City trailed only 14-10 at halftime. Abell and the linebacking unit repeatedly held Green Bay’s power sweep in check during the opening quarters. However, a third-quarter interception swung momentum permanently, and the Packers pulled away to win 35-10. Despite the loss, the performance confirmed that the AFL was capable of competing at the highest tier, directly accelerating the eventual AFL-NFL merger.
