Who Plays Tiana? Anika Noni Rose's Voice Legacy and Viral Live-Action Casting Proof

The decision to involve Colman Domingo and Robert O'Hara signals an intentional change in Disney's live-action remake strategy. Historically, Disney has copied the plots of its animated catalog beat for beat, as seen with Beauty and the Beast (2017) and The Lion King (2019). Those direct translations generated huge revenues, yet they frequently drew criticism for creative stagnation.
Colman Domingo brings serious creative weight. With an Oscar nomination for Rustin, multiple Emmy nominations, and a background in serious playwriting, Domingo approaches character work with literary depth. Pairing him with Robert O'Hara, a Tony-nominated theater visionary known for challenging, satirical stagings, indicates Disney wants a reimagined take rather than a frame-by-frame copy.
The live-action version must navigate historic criticisms that accompanied the original release. While celebrated for its cultural milestone, the 2009 film drew persistent critiques from audiences who noted that Disney's first Black princess spent approximately 75% of the movie's runtime transformed into a green amphibian. A fresh screen treatment led by Domingo and O'Hara gives the studio space to keep Tiana human, centered, and physically active within 1920s New Orleans society from start to finish.
