Who Played the Nanny in the Cat in the Hat? the Wild Story Behind Mrs. Kwan
By James H. Sterling
More than two decades after its theatrical misfire, The Cat in the Hat remains an instructive case study in studio overreach. Hollywood spent tens of millions attempting to turn a 61-page beginner reader book into a hyperactive vehicle for adult-skewing comedy, alienating critics and Seuss purists alike.
Yet Amy Hill’s deadpan performance as Mrs. Kwan stands out as an odd triumph of craft over chaos. Even while navigating an uncomfortably tense set, demanding mechanical rigs, and a production that ultimately shut down live-action Dr. Seuss adaptations for good, Hill managed to construct a piece of physical comedy so bizarre that the internet refuses to let it go.
James Sterling reports on renewable energy developments, climate policy, ecological conservation, and green tech innovations around the globe.
