Who Is the Guy Squinting Meme? the Surprising Real Story Behind the Web's Most Famous Face
By Marcus Vance
Anyone expecting to run into the clean-shaven, boyish blonde from 2013 on the street will almost certainly walk right past him. Recent coverage in outlets like the New York Post highlighted how unrecognizable Scanlon has become over the past decade. Today, he sports longer hair, a full beard, and round-rimmed glasses.
The physical transformation has granted him a rare privilege: everyday anonymity. While his face has appeared on the screens of half the planet, Scanlon rarely gets stopped on public transit. He left Giant Bomb in 2017 to launch Cloth Map, an independent documentary series exploring international cultures through local gaming traditions. He later transitioned into technical production and podcasting at Digital Sky, operating behind the audio mixing board rather than in front of the lens.
In interviews, Scanlon has described his meme status as an out-of-body reality. The image belongs to the global commons; the person living his life belongs to himself. That detachment prevented the psychological distress that often accompanies sudden, uninvited internet stardom.
