Who Is Lua Izzy Douglas? Inside Michael Douglas's Fourth-Generation Legacy
The name Lua Izzy Douglas carries deep historical weight. While "Lua" is the Portuguese word for "moon", a nod to mother Viviane Thibes's Brazilian roots, the middle name "Izzy" reaches back to the origins of the Douglas dynasty.
Kirk Douglas was born in Amsterdam, New York, in 1916 as Issur Danielovitch, the son of illiterate Jewish immigrants from Chavusy (modern-day Belarus). Growing up in severe poverty, he was known to family and close childhood friends as "Izzy." He worked dozens of odd jobs, from delivering newspapers to wrestling at carnivals, before enrolling at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and legally changing his name to Kirk Douglas prior to serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
When Cameron Douglas and Thibes revealed the baby's name in late December 2017, it resonated as an immediate homage. Kirk was 101 years old at the time. Choosing "Izzy" honored not the polished screen legend who played Spartacus, but the hardscrabble boy whose grit allowed the family to thrive in the first place.
