On Stage and Unfiltered: How Josh Johnson Explores Cultural Identity in His Specials
Johnson was born and raised in Alexandria, Louisiana, a small city situated in Rapides Parish. Unlike comics who emerge straight from metropolitan improv pipelines, his comedic worldview formed inside working-class Southern Black neighborhoods. His sets frequently return to this environment, chronicling everything from community church functions to the quiet tensions of growing up poor in central Louisiana.
In his 2023 Peacock special Up Here Killing Myself, Johnson openly dissects how his hometown’s cultural norms shaped his perception of danger, mental health, and masculine expectation. He recalls childhood memories where economic survival and racial awareness were simultaneous realities. Southern Black storytelling relies on pacing, dramatic pauses, and character imitation; Johnson adopted these habits at family gatherings long before setting foot inside a comedy club. By preserving his Louisiana roots rather than sanding them down for coastal audiences, he carves out an authentic space among contemporary Black comedians.
