When Garm enters the narrative, he does so as a hired destabilizer. Floki, the calculating commander of the Jomsvikings, secretly hires Garm to eliminate potential political threats to his lineage, chief among them Thorfinn, the rightful heir to the Jomsviking leadership through his grandfather, Sigvaldi. Floki expects a loyal attack dog. Instead, he purchases a walking liability.
Named after the monstrous hound that guards Hel in Norse mythology, Garm lives up to his namesake through uninhibited feral violence. Unlike Askeladd, who killed for calculated political survival, or young Thorfinn, who butchered for consuming vengeance, Garm kills because he enjoys the sensation. Battle is his sole social playground. He views high-stakes combat the way ordinary children view tag, laughing openly while puncturing human armor.
This dynamic introduces intense structural friction among the Jomsvikings. Garm harbors zero loyalty to warrior codes, political ambitions, or gold. He openly defies Floki whenever an order interferes with his desire to fight the strongest men on the battlefield. That complete absence of ideological restraint makes him unpredictably dangerous.
