Who Is Drake's Mother? Everything to Know About Young Sandi Graham and Her Family
The cultural collision that produced Drake began in the late 1970s at Club Bluenote, a storied rhythm-and-blues venue on Yonge Street in downtown Toronto. Dennis Graham, a charismatic African-American drummer hailing from a prominent Memphis musical family, his brother Larry Graham played bass for Sly and the Family Stone, regularly performed across the border. Sandi was captivated by the music and Dennis's outgoing persona.
Their relationship quickly bridged two entirely disparate cultural universes: traditional Canadian Jewish domesticity and the hard-touring Southern soul scene. The couple married and settled in Toronto, welcoming Aubrey Drake Graham on October 24, 1986. The marriage, however, was volatile. By the time Aubrey turned five, the couple separated permanently. Dennis returned to Memphis, facing legal hurdles and incarceration spells that kept him largely absent during Aubrey's formative primary school years.
