Who Is Candy Love? the Truth Behind the Viral Name Baffling Pop Culture
The dark core behind the name's resurgence belongs entirely to the June 13, 1980 death of Betty Gore in Wylie, Texas. The incident remains an indelible chapter of Texas true crime history, marked by its violent nature and idyllic suburban backdrop. Candy Montgomery, born Candace Wheeler, was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Lucas, singing in the choir, organizing vacation Bible schools, and befriending Gore, a local middle school teacher.
Beneath the church bake sales lay a secret relationship. Beginning in late 1978, Montgomery initiated a calculated, consensual affair with Gore’s husband, Allan Gore. The two met periodically at suburban motels in Richardson and Plano, intentionally treating the liaison as a transactional emotional outlet. Allan Gore eventually broke off the relationship in 1979 to focus on his marriage and the birth of their second daughter.
On a hot Friday morning in June 1980, Montgomery dropped by the Gore home on Dogwood Drive to pick up a swimsuit for Betty's older daughter, who was staying over for a sleepover. Inside the utility room, Betty confronted Montgomery about the affair. According to Montgomery’s subsequent courtroom testimony, Gore retrieved a three-foot wood-chopping axe from the garage. An altercation ensued, and Montgomery wrested the weapon away before striking Gore 41 times, leaving Gore’s infant daughter crying unattended in a nearby crib for hours until neighbors discovered the gruesome scene.
