Who Is 88Rising's Niki? Age, Real Name, Jakarta Roots, and Complete Discography Guide
In 2017, Zefanya moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to study music at Lipscomb University. Around the same time, fellow Jakarta-born artist Brian Imanuel, known internationally as Rich Brian, heard her independently released tracks "Polaroid Boy" and "Anaheim." Brian shared her music directly with Sean Miyashiro, the founder of 88rising. The hybrid media company and record label was actively scouting pioneering Asian talent capable of crossing over into Western mainstream markets.
Recognizing her exceptional vocal arrangement skills and producer instincts, Miyashiro signed Zefanya under the moniker NIKI. She promptly dropped out of college, relocated to Los Angeles, and joined an insurgent roster that included Joji, Rich Brian, and Higher Brothers. In 2018, she released her debut EP, Zephyr, featuring breakout tracks like "Vintage" and "Newsflash!" The project established her as an R&B stylist capable of matching early-2000s melodic bounce with contemporary digital production. Her appearances on the collective's collaborative projects, Head in the Clouds (2018) and Head in the Clouds II (2019), cemented her status as the leading female voice of the collective.
