Webber committed to Villanova out of high school, choosing head coach Denise Dillon’s squad on Philadelphia's Main Line. The location allowed Mike and Missy to make the roughly five-hour drive across the Pennsylvania Turnpike to watch home games at Finneran Pavilion. Webber excelled early, earning a spot on the Big East All-Freshman Team in 2024 after averaging 7.7 points per game and delivering timely perimeter shooting in the postseason.

After her sophomore campaign, Webber decided her collegiate journey required a new scheme and bigger conference competition. Entering the NCAA transfer portal in April 2025 was a high-stakes transition. College basketball's portal era moves rapidly, with programs contacting entered players within minutes.

Mike and Missy served as Webber's primary sounding board during those hectic weeks. As programs across the Power Four reached out, the Webbers focused on roster fit, coaching stability, and player development rather than quick promises. When Shauna Green and the Illinois coaching staff presented their vision for Webber’s offensive role in Champaign, the family felt a shared comfort level.

“It felt like the right place for me,” Webber told recruiting reporters after finalizing her pledge to Illinois in mid-April 2025. Her parents concurred, recognizing that Green's up-tempo transition system and emphasis on team accountability aligned with the principles Maddie grew up on in Bridgeville.
