Where Is 'I'm Starting to Forget Your Face' in Goodnight Punpun? Chapter & Panel Guide
The ending of Goodnight Punpun sparked intense debate upon its release in late 2013, with community arguments continuing across Reddit and manga forums today. Many readers initially expected Punpun to die or face long-term imprisonment. Instead, he receives something far more complicated: he is rescued by Sachi Nanjou.
Sachi functions as the antithesis of Aiko Tanaka. Where Aiko represents fatalistic escapism, childhood trauma, and mutual destruction, Sachi represents pragmatic, stubborn, unglamorous reality. Sachi works hard, makes art, pays rent, deals with an unplanned pregnancy, and refuses to let Punpun indulge in his suicidal melodrama. She drags him back into the living world by sheer force of will.
In the final chapter (Chapter 147), Asano pulls off a brilliant narrative inversion. The point of view shifts entirely away from Punpun to his childhood classmate, Harumi. Harumi, now an ordinary working adult with an ordinary fiancé, spots Punpun in a crowd, surrounded by Sachi, her child, and their friends.
To Harumi, Punpun simply looks like a guy hanging out with his social group on a pleasant afternoon. The audience knows the harrowing truth: that the quiet young man in the coat watched his childhood love hang herself in an abandoned room and gouged out his own eye. Yet the world around him does not care. Punpun is forced to live, to laugh at mediocre jokes, to run errands, and to continue existing in a world where Aiko Tanaka is dead and her face is permanently out of focus.
