Where Is El Chapo's Wife Emma Coronel Now? Inside Her Life After Prison
Coronel was never merely a passive observer. During the 2019 federal trial in Brooklyn that cemented Guzmán's downfall, prosecution witness Dámaso López Núñez ("El Licenciado") laid bare her operational involvement. She functioned as the principal conduit between the incarcerated drug lord and his cartel lieutenants.
Her most consequential assignment was the Altiplano prison escape in July 2015. Guzmán was held in Mexico's highest-security penitentiary, yet Coronel coordinated the acquisition of land adjacent to the facility, oversaw communications, and helped smuggle a GPS-enabled watch directly into Guzmán’s cell. The operation culminated in Guzmán descending through a shower floor into a ventilated, mile-long tunnel equipped with an adapted motorcycle on rails.
Federal authorities caught up with her in February 2021 at Dulles International Airport in Virginia. Facing decades behind bars, Coronel pleaded guilty to three federal counts: conspiracy to distribute illegal drugs, money laundering, and engaging in financial transactions with a designated foreign narcotics trafficker. Her defense successfully argued she was a minor participant compared to cartel kingpins, resulting in a 36-month sentence and the forfeiture of $1.5 million in illicit proceeds.
