Where Are They Now? the Untold Truth Behind the Cast of the Benchwarmers
By Alexander Ross
Studios rarely greenlight movies like The Benchwarmers anymore. Mid-budget, PG-13 sports slapsticks driven by physical humor and unhinged sight gags have largely disappeared from theatrical release schedules, replaced by high-budget franchise tentpoles or direct-to-consumer digital releases. The movie represents an era when theatrical audiences would happily pack local cinemas on a Friday night just to watch comedians take fastballs to the groin.
While the film generated a direct-to-video follow-up, Benchwarmers 2: Ghosts of the Past in 2019, starring Chris Klein, it lacked the involvement of the original trio and came nowhere near matching the original's reach. For millennials who grew up in the mid-2000s, the original remains an untouchable Saturday afternoon cable classic, preserved by an ensemble cast whose odd dynamic worked far better on screen than anyone predicted.
