What Music Genre Is Niki? the Complete Definitive Guide for Listeners
By Maya Lin-Takahashi
In 2020, NIKI moved in a completely different direction with her debut full-length studio album, Moonchild. Conceived as a ten-track concept project split into three thematic phases, the record abandoned breezy club grooves in favor of theatrical art pop, orchestral arrangements, and experimental electronic textures.
Songs such as "Switchblade" and "Selene" featured sweeping strings, futuristic synth patterns, and shifting time signatures. Working with producers like Jacob Ray and Bekon, NIKI used cinematic motifs to explore themes of alienation and creative disillusionment after moving from Indonesia to Los Angeles.
Critics took note of the dramatic pivot. Online music forums questioned whether the jump from breezy R&B to conceptual pop was too jarring, but Moonchild proved that NIKI refused to stay trapped inside Spotify’s algorithmic R&B buckets. It proved her vocal arrangements could command massive, cinematic backdrops while retaining personal lyricism.
