Long before touring rock musicians ever touched foot in Seattle, Puget Sound fishermen used the term "mudshark" as working-class shorthand. The creature at the center of the vocabulary is Squalus acanthias, commonly classified by marine biologists as the spiny dogfish or Pacific dogfish. Ranging from 2.5 to 4 feet in length and weighing an average of 7 to 15 pounds, these small elasmobranchs dwell near sandy, muddy sea floors, hunting small fish, squid, and crustaceans.

Unlike apex predators such as the great white or tiger shark, the dogfish poses virtually no physical danger to humans beyond the sharp, mildly venomous spines positioned in front of each dorsal fin. Fishermen in Washington state frequently hooked them while trolling for king salmon. Because they feed aggressively along benthic layers, commercial anglers regarded them as a minor nuisance, casually dubbing them mudsharks due to the murky habitats they frequent throughout the Pacific rim.
