What Dms Look Like When Active Status Is off: Visual Proof and Indicator Changes
Instagram divides presence controls across two distinct toggles nested deep within account privacy settings. Understanding the difference between them prevents unintentional leaks of your online footprint.
To reach these controls, open your profile, tap the hamburger menu in the top right corner, select Settings and privacy, scroll down to Messages and story replies, and tap Show activity status. Here, the interface presents two options:
- Show Activity Status (Master Toggle): This is the universal kill switch. Switching this off hides your online indicators from everyone you message or follow, while stripping away your ability to see their statuses.
- Show When You're Active Together: This nested setting activates only when the master toggle is on. It controls whether accounts in the same direct message thread can see when both of you are actively inside that specific chat room at the exact same moment.
Turning off "Show When You're Active Together" while leaving the master toggle enabled allows you to maintain general presence visibility while concealing whether you are currently staring at a specific chat screen. However, flipping the master switch shuts down both systems at once.
