'We're Not Broken, Just Bent': Why P! Nk's Anthem Is Taking over Social Media Again
When P!nk entered the recording studio in 2012 to develop material for her sixth studio album, The Truth About Love, she did not intend to cut a traditional duet. She initially approached Nate Ruess simply as a songwriting collaborator, admiring his work on Fun.'s breakthrough album Some Nights. Working alongside producer Jeff Bhasker, the pair began sketching out a conversation between two lovers who interpret the same relationship through starkly conflicting lenses.
The creative dynamic altered when P!nk realized the song lost its emotional tension as a solo performance. During studio sessions, she pressed Ruess to sing the second verse, arguing that the track required an authentic dialogue where both participants felt equally misunderstood. Ruess hesitated, noting that his band was at the height of its international fame and he was reluctant to launch outside pop collaborations. P!nk persisted, eventually convincing him that the song's dramatic core hinged entirely on hearing both sides of an agonizing domestic argument.
The resulting vocal exchange elevated the track beyond standard pop balladry. Ruess contributed high, soaring tenors that matched P!nk’s gritty, full-throated belt, creating an interplay that sounded less like a rehearsed studio production and more like an earnest living-room standoff.
