Watch Joe C. Rapping Live: 5 Unforgettable Performances That Defined Rap-Rock
Before arenas shook beneath his boots, Joseph Calleja was a dedicated participant in the raw, competitive Detroit hip hop scene. Born in 1974 in Taylor, Michigan, Calleja suffered from severe celiac disease, an autoimmune condition that stunted his skeletal growth and forced him to manage extreme health challenges throughout his youth. Rather than retreating, he gravitated toward rap music, studying the cadences of Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, and local Michigan underground pioneers.
His union with Bob Ritchie, known professionally as Kid Rock, occurred in 1994 at a local Michigan concert. Impressed by Calleja’s encyclopedic knowledge of rhymes and fearless personality, Ritchie brought him into the fold during the recording of Early Morning Stoned Pimp. When Ritchie organized the Twisted Brown Trucker band to fuse southern rock guitars with hard-hitting boom-bap drums, Calleja was installed as the hypeman and co-vocalist. He brought an immediate edge that transformed their stage presence from a standard rock group into an unpredictable hip-hop revue.
