Tyler, the Creator Birthday Special: Discography, Tour History, and Essential Faq
Okonma grew up between Hawthorne and Ladera Heights, California, raised primarily by his mother. He was never an insider. As a child, he famously drew mock album covers and tracklists inside empty CD jewel cases before he even knew how to produce music. He taught himself piano at age 14, blending aggressive punk tempos with the chords of Pharrell Williams and Stevie Wonder.
By late 2007, he rallied a loose confederation of teenage outcasts under the banner Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA). The crew included future stars like Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, and Syd. When Okonma dropped his self-produced debut mixtape Bastard in 2009, followed by the feral video for "Yonkers" in 2011, mainstream gatekeepers reacted with equal parts shock and fascination.
Underneath the youthful shock value lay an obsessive student of arrangement. Okonma handled the engineering, art direction, and stage production himself. While critics fixated on aggressive lyrics, his community saw a rare creative force building an empire out of skate decks, pastel tube socks, and distorted basslines.
