Tom Kaulitz was born ten minutes ahead of his twin brother, Bill, on September 1, 1989, in Leipzig, East Germany, just weeks before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Following their parents' divorce, the twins moved with their mother to Loitsche, a small rural village near Magdeburg. Life in post-reunification eastern Germany was quiet, often conservative, and occasionally hostile to creative misfits. The Kaulitz brothers did not blend into rural school corridors. They were defiant outsiders from grammar school onward.
Music arrived through their stepfather, Gordon Trümper, a guitarist in a local rock group called Fatun. Trümper recognized Tom’s natural rhythmic ear and placed a guitar in his hands when the boy was seven years old. While Bill took naturally to lyrics and dramatic vocal stylings, Tom obsessively ran chord progressions and studied heavy riff construction. By age ten, the twins were writing original material and gigging in small Magdeburg clubs. In 2001, after meeting bassist Georg Listing and drummer Gustav Schäfer at a local show, they formed Devilish. That garage group would soon become Tokio Hotel.
