Burned by Lime on Your Lips? Complete Recovery Guide, Home Remedies, and Prevention Strategies
Preventing phytophotodermatitis does not mean giving up fresh citrus outdoors. It simply comes down to building a few smart habits into warm-weather gatherings.
If you enjoy citrus beverages poolside or at the beach, drink through a straw to keep acidic oils off your lips. When prepping limes for cooking or drinks, wash your hands and mouth thoroughly with soap and water before heading into the sun. Alcohol hand sanitizers do not dissolve psoralen compounds, and rinsing with plain water is often not enough to clear oily residues from the skin.
Always apply a generous layer of water-resistant mineral lip sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before sun exposure. If lime juice touches your lips and soap is out of reach, blot the area with a wet towel and seek shade immediately. Limiting your UV exposure during peak hours, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., substantially lowers the risk of triggering this photochemical reaction.
