Timeline: How the Armed Person Standoff Unfolded at Point Lookout State Park
The alert went out in early afternoon when 911 dispatchers in St. Mary's County received reports of a distraught individual openly displaying a firearm near the public grounds. Maryland Natural Resources Police units were already patrolling the waterfront when the call dropped. Recognizing the geographic bottleneck of the peninsula, dispatchers immediately requested backup from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryland State Police.
First responders faced a tactical puzzle. Point Lookout sits at the very end of Maryland Route 5, bordered by the Chesapeake Bay to the east and the Potomac River to the west. There is only one road in and one road out. Any tactical error risked trapping fleeing civilians against the water. Officers established an incident command post just north of the park entrance gates in Scotland MD, halting all inbound traffic while patrol cruisers rolled south with sirens silenced to avoid agitating the subject.
