The Visual Evolution of 'Raining Tacos': from Viral Flash to Roblox and Ai Animation
Long before children recited lyrics about sour cream and shell-bound beef, Parry Gripp fronted Nerf Herder, the Santa Barbara pop-punk outfit best known for composing the iconic theme song to *Buffy the Vampire Slayer*. When the traditional music industry shifted toward streaming models in the late 2000s, Gripp pivoted his melodic sensibilities toward the nascent world of online video. He realized that the punchy, hyper-compressed structures of pop-punk fit the micro-attention spans of web viewers.
Gripp uploaded "Raining Tacos" in August 2012. To bring the audio to life, he partnered with animator Ryan Boone, known online as BooneBum. Boone created a Flash-based visual sequence characterized by saturated pastels, bouncing character rigs, and visual gags featuring tacos plummeting past clouds, open mouths, and umbrellas. The video arrived during the golden age of YouTube Flash animation, a distinct period when creator-driven shorts racked up tens of millions of organic views without corporate studio backing.
The visual simplicity was deliberate. The animation synced directly with the catchy earworm lyrics, providing visual payoffs for every cheese and lettuce reference. It generated over 80 million views on Gripp’s primary channel alone, while unauthorized mirrored clips, school-project tributes, and dance challenges pushed its true view count deep into the hundreds of millions.
